Salleri, District Capital of the Solukhumbu District, Nepal Join Edge of Seven in Nepal to help build a six-room hostel to house 20 girls attending university in the Solukhumbu (Everest) Region. The hostel will be built using the environmentally-friendly and earthquake-resistant earthbag building method and will house 20 girls from remote villages in the Solukhumbu Region who have graduated from grade 12 and desire to continue their educations at the local university in Salleri, the only university in the entire region. Volunteers will work daily at the project site to build the hostel by performing the myriad tasks related to earthbag construction, such as tying bags, making gravel, filling bags, stacking walls, etc.

Logistics: Volunteers will reach Salleri by flying from Kathmandu to the Phaplu airport in the Solukhumbu District and then trekking for an hour to the project site. Once at the project site, volunteers will work each day at the site, staying with local families and eating local cuisine.

Your Impact: Housing is essential to creating access to higher educational facilities, as there are few roadways in the Solukhumbu Region. Girls from villages located a two- to four-day walk from Salleri face cultural and economic barriers to education without gender-appropriate housing. All girls who are accepted to the Solukhumbu University Girls Hostel will receive free room and board, as well as scholarships to the local university.

To Sign Up: To request more information, email sarah@edgeofseven.org. For payment, a $1,000 deposit will be due at sign-up and the balance is due 60 days before you depart.

Custom Groups: Edge of Seven has the ability to create custom itineraries for groups interested in contributing on alternative dates. Please send an email to sarah@edgeofseven.org if you would like to learn more!

Naro Moru, Kenya Join Edge of Seven to help build a Resource and Business Center to serve more than 500 women in the community of Naro Moru, Kenya. The Resource Center will feature classroom and workshop space, as well as an open air market for women to set up their independent businesses. The Resource Center will serve the Naro Moru Women’s Group, which reaches more than 500 women. Volunteers will have the opportunity to get hands-on at the project site, assisting with construction duties, as well as get to know the community and explore local sites, such as Mt. Kenya National Park.

Logistics: Volunteers will reach Naro Moru by private jeep from Nairobi, which is a three hour commute. Once in Naro Moru, volunteers will stay at a local lodge through which meals will be provided.

Your Impact: Resources designed to empower women are very limited in Naro Moru. By providing a dedicated space for women to convene and access educational opportunities and a marketplace, the Women’s Resource and Business Center will open up doors of personal and economic opportunity.
